How to get rid of brain rot on YouTube

. YouTube’s controls checked that day on YouTube Help, for youtube.com on a computer.

Short answer: YouTube recommends brain rot because it learns from what you watch. To get rid of it, mark brain rot videos “Not interested”, choose “Don’t recommend channel” for the worst channels, and delete the watch history that taught YouTube to suggest them. Those fixes are free and work one video at a time. To clear your whole feed at once, filterslop removes the clickbait, rage bait and filler before you see them, and shows why each one went.

What brain rot is

Oxford University Press named brain rot its Word of the Year for 2024. It defines brain rot as “the supposed deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as the result of overconsumption of material (now particularly online content) considered to be trivial or unchallenging”.

On YouTube, brain rot is the stuff that feels like a break and turns into an hour:

Why YouTube keeps recommending it

YouTube says the recommendations on its homepage rely primarily on your watch history (YouTube Help). The other signals it lists are your search history, subscriptions, likes, dislikes, “Not interested” and “Don’t recommend channel” feedback, and satisfaction surveys.

So every brain rot video you watch, even one you watch to complain about, is a signal for more like it. A few late nights of clickbait can fill your home feed with it.

Filter brain rot out of your whole feed

YouTube’s own tools work one video at a time. filterslop works on every video in your feed, before you see it.

filterslop changes what you see, not what YouTube recommends. What you don’t click doesn’t go into your watch history, the signal YouTube relies on most.

Price: $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year. Your first payment is refundable for 7 days, and you can cancel from your account.

Clean up your recommendations with YouTube’s own tools

These are free and built into youtube.com. Steps are for a computer, from YouTube Help, checked 2026-11-05.

1. Mark brain rot “Not interested”

Click More next to the video’s title, then Not interested. Click Tell us why and choose “I don’t like the video”. You can do the same to a whole section on Home (YouTube Help). YouTube says videos you mark “Not interested” help inform what to avoid recommending in the future.

2. Tell YouTube to skip a channel

Click More next to a video’s title and select Don’t recommend channel. YouTube uses it as a signal that the channel’s content likely isn’t something you enjoyed watching (YouTube Help).

3. Delete brain rot from your watch history

Go to My Activity and click the X next to a video to delete it, or Delete to remove a stretch of time. YouTube says it won’t base future video recommendations on history you delete (YouTube Help). Deleting a stretch of time also deletes your search history from it.

4. Delete the searches that led you there

Visit My Activity and delete the searches you regret. YouTube says search entries you delete will no longer influence your recommendations (YouTube Help).

5. Answer the surveys

When YouTube asks you to rate a video you watched, answer honestly. YouTube says these surveys help it understand satisfaction, not just watch time (YouTube Help).

6. Turn off recommendations completely

In My Activity, click the Controls tab and select Turn off to pause your watch history, then delete it. YouTube says that with watch history off and no significant prior watch history, the homepage shows the search bar and the left-side menu instead of recommended videos (YouTube Help). The good videos go too.

7. See fewer Shorts

In the YouTube app, tap More at the top of a Shorts grid on Home, then Show fewer Shorts (YouTube Help). YouTube Help lists no Shorts switch for a computer. filterslop has one.

Where YouTube’s tools stop

They are free and worth doing. But they work one video or one channel at a time, and they nudge the algorithm rather than set rules. A few clicks on a new topic can pull your feed back to brain rot.

Turning recommendations off stops the scroll, but every good video then starts with a search, and you stop finding channels you didn’t know to look for. If that is the trade you want, see how filterslop compares with Unhook, a free extension that hides the feed.

Example: from brain rot to a feed worth opening

  1. Delete the week of watch history that pulled the brain rot in. That also clears the week’s searches.
  2. Mark the next few clickbait videos “Not interested”, and choose “Don’t recommend channel” for channels that only post rage bait.
  3. Install filterslop, pick Learning or Relaxing as your goal, and add the topics you care about.
  4. Your home feed keeps the videos worth your time. Brain rot moves to a list at the top, each with its reason, and Show anyway brings any of them back.
